Home improvement snagging checklist before handover

Check the agreed finish, record issues clearly and close the job fairly.
Applies to: UK homeowners; rights and payment obligations depend on the contract and facts.
Last checked: 16 October 2026
Key points
• Compare the finished work with the written specification, not only personal preference.
• List defects with clear photos and realistic access for repairs.
• Do not assume you can withhold every outstanding payment simply because a snag exists.

Practical handover checks

• Has the agreed work been completed and made good?
• Are visible finishes, levels, doors and fixtures as specified?
• Have rubbish, protection and unused materials been cleared as agreed?
• Have required certificates, manuals and warranties been supplied?
• Are there leaks, movement, loose fittings or other safety concerns?
• Are any outstanding items recorded with a planned remedy date?

Keep a dated record

Photograph each item, describe its location and refer to the agreed specification. Give the tradesperson an opportunity to inspect and respond. Document what both sides agree will happen next.

When the disagreement is serious

Citizens Advice explains that home-improvement services should be carried out with reasonable care and skill. The remedy and payment position depend on the nature of the fault and the agreement, so avoid inventing a blanket rule about withholding final payment.
